Working at the forge March 2007

Olympic Sculpt - Brampton Manor School

In November 2006 a group of year ten students were introduced to the idea of public art by the 'Big Art Project Team' and began to explore how artists gather information and inspiration for works of art. The students learnt about the history of Becton Alps one of six sites selected by Channel 4 in the Big Art Project.
From December 2006 to March 2007 the students researchd Newham and the impact of the 2012 Olympics will have on the borough and developd their individual ideas to produce a piece of sculpture based on the human figure in motion for their school or local community.

In January 2007 the students met Kevin Boys the sculptor/blacksmith who would be working with them to turn their ideas in to reality. The session gave the students the opportunity to discuss their ideas with Kevin and to question him about his working methods and the processes of transforming iron bars in to recognisable figures in motion. This session was followed up with a science workshop led by Des Dunne a Science / Management Consultant who explored the notion of balance and the properties of materials etc in relation to building a large sculpture.

19th March - 30th March 2007 - Kevin Boys Blacksmith and his team worked with the students to create a series of figures engaged in different sporting activities using a portable forge. The figures created were then welded together to create a large scale sculpture.

Background
The global economy is changing at an unprecedented rate. Advances in technology dramatically change the way we work and think. Science innovation and creativity are at the heart of these transformations. The foundations for successful science and art learning are made in schools.
The purpose of this project is to enthuse teaching in both science and art. The target audience is students studying both science and art and design.
During the project, students will visit museums observing and studying sculpture based on sports and movement. They will use their studies as a context for learning about forces and their effects, being fit and healthy (science) and the human form (art and design).
The project is based on the Channel 4 - Big Art Project and involves Brampton Manor and Kingsford Schools in the London Borough of Newham.
